Abstract

Major settlements along the coast of Akwa-Ibom State in Nigeria are experiencing extensive wave erosion along their fore-shores. However, the Nigerian Government had erected protective structures along the shores of three of these settlements namely, Jamestown, Oron and Ibeno. At Jamestown, the shores have been protected against wave erosion by a concrete overlay while at Ibeno and Oron, the shore protection measures consist of a combination of geotextile sandbags, rock gabions and a bituminous overlay. Recent field investigations have shown that extensive failures have occurred in the protective measures adopted at Oron and to a lesser extent at Jamestown and Ibeno. The observed modes of failure of the shore protective structures of these sites consist of (a) tensile cracking perpendicular and parallel to the shoreline, (b) boundary failures, (c) separation of rock gabions, (d) tensile gashes in geotextile bags, (e) failure of gabion materials, (f) movement of anchor supports, (g) piping from back-swamps and (h) loss of boulders through toe of bank slope.
