Abstract

In an estuary, harbour installations lead to the evolution of lateral muddy deposits and to the accretion of submarine dredging deposits. Research into the behaviour of these sites requires a multidisciplinary approach, taking into account cyclical and random estuarine dynamics. In a case study of the Loire-estuary (France), we have taken the following scientific approach : identification of the geological, hydraulic and morphological characteristics of the area determination of the nature and the formation of soils and their mechanical properties for the submarine deposits : interaction between hydraulics and marine geotechnics, comparaisons of estimations and in-situ measurements for lateral muddy deposits : we have taken into account chemical analysis of interstitial waters in the estimation of failure phenomena The proposed methodology may be applied to other harbour sites in estuarine environments.
