Abstract

In certain estuarine zones, it is necessary for marine works to study stratified clayed soils. In the Loire estuary (France), these sediments, made-up of interbedded fine sands and clays, can be in industrial zones, built on ancient mudflats which have been filled with sands. These materials are subjected to loading effects from wharfs which provoke failures of the underlying stratified sediments. The geolo gical origin of these sediments is linked to the erosion of the underlying riverbed, and its infilling during the last glaciation. The physicochemical characteristics and the mechanical behaviour of this material have been obtained by in-situ and laboratory experiments. Despite the sediment being heterogeneous in composition, this material behaves like an homogeneous clay. In particular, the geotechnical characteristics of this sediment are very similar to that of the varved clays of Canada.
