Abstract

We studied the correlation between confining pressure and the physical properties i>f fault gouge, and point out that confining pressure is the dominant in controling the void ratio and dry bulk density of fault gouge. There is a fine correlation between confining pressure and the void ratio and dry bulk density. Owing to the controlling effect of the confining pressure on the physical properties of fault gouge, the gouge gets a higher value of shear strength under the higher confining pressure. Here again a fine correlation exists between the confining pressure and the shear strength of the gouge.
