Abstract

Saudi Arabia possesses great varieties of geological formations that can be considered as important sources of dimension stones. Marble is one of these formations and is the most popular ornamental stone that is locally used. Granite and eruptive rocks are used to a much lesser extent. Large quantities of finished and unfinished ornamental stones are imported every year particularly from Italy. The purpose of this research is to assess some of the local occurrences through investigating their geomechanical properties and evaluating their potential commercial use. The assessment includes the marble deposits at Wadi Turabah, Jabal Khanugah and Jabal A1 Khawar, and the granite masses at Jabal Jabalah, Jabal A1 Bakri and Jabal Dheraya. A comparative study was also made between the geomechanical properties of these rock units and those of Biano Unito de Carrara marble and Rosa Baveno granite. With improved finish, some of the investigated dimension stones can compete with the imported ones and should be commercially used. l’Arabie Saoudite possède de grandes variétés de formations géologiques.
