Evaluation of crushed granitic rock aggregates in Ghana
Abstract
A significant expansion in the building and construction industry of Ghana in recent times has necessitated a greater demand for the use of rock aggregates in concrete and road works. It is essential, therefore, that more quarriable rock outcrops or natural gravel deposits be located and their geological and engineering properties evaluated in addition to updating information on the existing quarries. The present paper summarises information, obtained from a thorough literature search and field and laboratory studies, on the suitability of the various Ghanaian granitic rocks for use as concrete and road aggregates. The choice of granitic rocks for the study is explained by the fact that they are widespread (covering about 25 percent of the total land surface) and also form the bulk of the country’s aggregate resources. An attempt has been made to establish functional relationships between various rock aggregate properties with a view to providing a cost-effective approach to the selection of design parameters. The potential for alkali-aggregate reactivity of these rock materials in concrete has also been assessed from a critical study of their petrofabrics. The study generally seeks to emphasise the need for thorough engineering geological investigations in the economic exploitation of aggregates which, when combined with field performance studies, will provide the necessary framework for a reliable specification of Ghanaian rock aggregates for concrete and road works.
