Abstract

In service performance of highway wearing courses is dependent on many complex inter-related factors. Monitoring of road sites in the U.K. has demonstrated the influence of aggregate type and quality on mechanisms of deterioration. Overall performance of aggregates in bituminous wearing courses depends on: (a) soundness especially moisture-susceptibility and (b) adhesion with binder. Some &s;sound&s; aggregates have been found to have relatively poor adhesion with binder. Although many tests have been developed to determine soundness and to assess adhesion, such tests are often carried out on single size aggregate and results are often difficult to relate to actual materials used. In this investigation laboratory performance tests have been carried out on mixes using different types of aggregates. These tests have revealed that differences in performance and modes of deterioration (stripping, fretting) are related to the different types of aggregate used. Such tests are leading to more realistic means of understanding and predicting in service behaviour of materials, and improved performance achieved by, for example, the use of additives. The investigations described have been supported by the U.K. Science and Engineering Research Council, Transport and Road Research Laboratory&s;, Local Authorities and material producing companies.
