Abstract

The rock engineering aspects of the concrete lined pressure tunnels for the Drakensberg Pumped Storage Scheme covering investigation, design and construction are described. The scheme has an operating head of some 500m and is located in a near horizontally bedded sedimentary rock formation containing relatively weak argillaceous strata. Detailed investigations included a test chamber, hydrofracture testing and in-situ stress measurements. The test chamber was fully instrumented and tested to determine the lining/rock response up to internal pressures of the same order as the overburden stress. Design criteria were developed for the permissible extent of the concrete linings with respect to overburden criteria, the long term rock support characteristics and the general behaviour of the composite lining/rock structure. Controlled excavation and support procedures for the tunnels are described. Lining prestressing using interface grouting was carried out to minimise the potential for cracking and inhibit deterioration of the rock due to the frequent pressure fluctuations within the waterway. The behaviour of the lining during watering up was monitored and compliance with the design model observed.
