Abstract

SUMMARY: High speed tunnelling rate and the ability to advance the tunnel heading while creating little disturbance to the stability of rock formations are two of the most important advantages in the use of full face tunnel boring machines. However, if a machine does not accomplish both of these objectives better than conventional drill and blast methods, it may be a liability to the job. The major reasons for the misapplication of TBM’s stem from a lack of understanding on the part of owners, contractors and manufacturers of two things: 1. what ground conditions will be encountered as the tunnel advances 2. what features should be incorporated in the machine to seccessfully cope with these geologic conditions. The selection may depend on the degree of instability expected in the ground and the rate at which failure will occur. The rate of failure in overstressed rock is proportional to the ratio of the rock stress to the apparent rock mass strength. Water may or may not be present and in many locations such as Spain, The U.S.S.R. and the U.S.A, good advance rates have been maintained while boring through high water in flow at the face. However, at these same locations when the water washed in large quantities of fine or crushed material from fault zones or unconsolidated layers the heading advance was completely stopped. Tunnel boring machines, especially fullface machines for boring rock formations have been used on more challenging jobs as the capability of these machines has developed over the years.
