Abstract

SUMMARY: The continuing growth of the use of Selective Cutting Machines for driving roadways and tunnels in both civil engineering projects and in coalmines, as well as for mining minerals by the pillar and chamber method has attracted much interest during the past years. As compared with full-facers, roadheaders of this type have the advantage that they are independent of the shape of the cross-section. Owing to the excellent manoeuvrability of the machine small curves and roadway junctions can be negotiated. Two recent applications of Selective Cutting Machines open up new possibilities in the successful use of adequately modified versions of this type of machine even in difficult strata conditions. The results obtained with the Boom Cutter Loader “Luchs” in the drivage of a sag pipe crossing under the Rhine river with only a small cover where large quantities of carbonated water were encountered were a great success. Equipped with auxiliary equipment the Boom Cutter Loader type used on this project operated efficiently even on a section with a gradient of 60% to the rise. Another application of a “H-Luchs” was to drive tunnels for the Munich underground system by using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method. Here the Selective Cutting Machine proved to be capable of heading even large cross-section tunnels from a static central position.
