Abstract

SYNOPSIS: The first part of this lecture presents current boring and sampling practices commonly employed in site investigations for coastal structures. The use of scaffolding is a difficult part of boring and sampling work offshore. Once a drill rig is placed on a stable platform, boring and sampling techniques similar to those used for onshore site investigation can be applied with appropriate caution being taken for work carried out at sea. Methods to evaluate the quality of undisturbed samples of soft cohesive soils from the results of laboratory soil tests are presented in the second part of this lecture.
