Abstract

Already at an early date, the Senate, the port administration and the port operating firms of the State of Bremen, became aware of the opportunities inherent in a purposeful promotion of container handling in the port of Bremerhaven. This port can be reached by the 3rd generation container ships without extended navigation in a narrow estuary, and is also favourably situated for onward transportation to the hinterland (Fig. 1). However for an optimum solution, the Container Terminal had to be located on the Weser River outside the locked harbour. An adequately large area north of the Bremerhaven North Lock was selected for the location of the terminal. Details on this, inclusive of the road and rail connections, may be seen in Fig. 2, which shows the first construction stage of 1970/72 with three berths of a total length of 952 m. A southern extension by 568 m was carried out in 1978/79. The northern extension by 630 m for 2 additional berths is under construction at present and is scheduled to be completed in 1983 (Fig. 3).
