Abstract

The construction of the Prachulachomklao Dockyard has involved a massive piling operation, one of the largest and most complex ever, and several deep excavations. Because of the soft Bangkok clay which overlies the whole site, geotechnical considerations were a major factor in the design of the dockyard and the methods chosen for its construction. The extensive site investigation work which was carried out and careful planning of the site operations has enabled the construction to proceed without interruption or serious technical problems. Phase I of the dockyard was completed on time and handed to the Royal Thai Navy in January 1981. The final phase is now under construction and it is expected that it will be completed in January 1982 as programmed.
