Abstract

The verification of the capacity of driven piles based on pile driving formulae eventually correlated with pile load test data from the actual site was for many years the standard practice. Such formulae are still used to some extent onland but since the introduction of the wave equation concept in pile driving some 20 years ago the understanding of the pile driving phenomenon has improved substantially. There is now an increasing tendency to use wave equation solutions instead of pile driving formulae. When digital components became available discrete solutions of the wave equation became practical.
