Abstract

In an attempt to determine whether Johannesburg’s Sanitary Landfills are possibly contaminating groundwater, a groundwater pollution monitoring program has been instituted by the City Engineer’s Department in conjunction with the City Health Department Chemical and Microbiological laboratories. To this end, groundwater pollution monitoring boreholes have been drilled around some of the City’s sanitary landfill sites and it is intended to extend this to all currently active and future landfill sites.
