Abstract

This paper reports an experimental study of the relationship between the final ice lens (F.I.L.) growth rate and the temperature conditions in the frozen fringe. Two kinds of experiments were performed under different temperature boundary conditions. In Test A, after an F.I.L. was formed in a sample, the temperature of the warm end plate was changed in successive stages. In Test B, both end plate temperatures were held constant throughout the experiment. From these experiments, a linear relationship was found between the water intake rate of the F.I.L. and the warm side temperature of the F.I.L. An simplified model was proposed to get the changes of frost heave amount and frost heave rate after the formation of the F.I.L. from the data at the time of its formation.
