Abstract

A one-dimensional mathematical model for predicting frost heave in a finite ‘ column of soil is given. It is based on Miller’s theory of secondary heave and uses some quasi-static approximations for temperature and pore water pressure profiles. By writing down the energy and mass conservation equations, the problem is reduced to a straightforward temperature calculation and the solution of two ordinary differential equations. Numerical results are given which show the relationship between the heave and the overburden pressures. These results show a good qualitative agreement with the results of laboratory freezing tests on soil columns.
