Time-dependence and volumetric change characteristic of frozen sand under triaxial stress condition
Abstract
This paper is concerned with the mechanical properties of frozen sand. A series of triaxial compression tests on frozen sand with measuring the volume change was carried out under the temperature range from -2°C to -50°C and the confining pressure from OMpa to 10Mpa. In addition to common knowledge of the mechanical properties of frozen sands, the dependence of the elastic moduli of the materials on the temperature was discussed and a new failure criterion for the materials is proposed based on the experimental results.
