Abstract

A new engineering model for creep behaviour in frozen soil is proposed. So far it is only one-dimensional. As an attempt to contribute to the understanding of creep behaviour, effort is made to give the parameters a physical or mechanical meaning. For this reason the model is based on the principle of time resistance ( Janbu 1969 ). The resistance against a cause is derived from experiments showing the relationship between a cause and its effect (strain). The stress dependency of creep is taken into account through a degree of mobilization i.e. the ratio between the applied stresslevel and a reference strength, whereas the temperature dependency is taken into account by the amount of unfrozen water, which strongly effects the creep behaviour. This paper gives the equations of the new model, and include guidelines for parameter selection. Finally, a description of fairly simple creep equipment called KRYPAKS is included. This equipment is constructed to run creeptests on frozen soils at low costs.
