Abstract

The construction of the Louise Station on the Brussels subway was carried out under the protection of a horizontal slab of frozen soil. The soil is a decalcified sand of unstable structure, its porosity is about 50 %, and it is practically dry at certain places. The ground was injected with water to permit freezing. This communication describes how the rheological properties of the frozen ground were estimated by an in situ test. The article also shows the way in which the ground was moistened so as to permit freezing.
