Abstract

The recent construction of the Interprovincial Pipe Line from Norman Wells, N.W.T. to Zama, Alberta required special design measures where the pipeline was buried in the ice rich permafrost slopes. To maintain the integrity of such slopes during subsequent pipeline operations, it was necessary to limit the amount of thawing. The insulation mode that was selected to meet design objectives specified the placement of wood chips on critical slopes after pipeline burial.
