Abstract

The new type earth pressure gauges to measure the frost heaving pressure on an LNG inground tank in operation have been developed, and those were installed on the side walls of Tanks A and B, one gauge to each tank, after verification of the gauge performance on the laboratory tests using actual frozen soil. The soil layers subjected to the field measurements were a clay layer in the case of Tank A, and a sand layer in the case of Tank B. The values in both cases were obtained correctly without any scattering, and well agree with the values analyzed in the design stage of the tanks. Accordingly, we have concluded that the newly-developed earth pressure gauges are effective in measuring the frost heaving pressure on LNG inground tanks in operation.
