The effect of sampling disturbance on the undrained strength of cohesive soils
Abstract
Experimental studies were conducted to investigate the effect of disturbance due to sample preparation on the undrained shear strength of cohesive soils with a plasticity index ranging between 10 and 50. It was found that soils with a lower plasticity index are brought into a state of higher overconsolidation leading to higher disturbance and that the reduction of effective stress in samples due to trimming is almost constant for all the soils tested. The reduction of undrained strength of trimmed samples with a plasticity index of 10 is as much as 40% of that of ideal samples.
