Abstract

A total of 550 linear meters of trenches and pits were excavated at salient geomorphic features within the Haaskraal Pan complex, Richmond District, Cape Province. A complex series of varying sedimentological regimes were mapped from the excavation profiles. Combined with pedological descriptions, sedimentological and X ray diffraction analyses evidence exists for major palaeoenvironmental changes in the semi-arid Karoo since the Middle Pleistocene. The environmental changes span the transition from Acheulian to Orangian stone industries in the area.
