The overall pattern of appearance, movement and extinction for African Hyaenidae, Felidae and Canidae from Mid Miocene to recent times is described. Some of the problems posed by the availability of samples and dates are briefly mentioned, and events in the history of the larger carnivores are discussed in relation to some events in the history of the Bovidae.
