Abstract

This preliminary examination of the upper part of the sequence of micromammalian samples from Klasies River 1A indicates moderate change in vegetation. In general the vegetation on the cliffs and coastal foreland appears to have become more closed, with an increase in bush on the foreland and grass encroaching on the scrub on the cliffs. The coastal margin and river valley retained lush vegetation throughout but rising sea-level may have reduced the extent of the vegetation. Rainfall probably did not vary greatly but is more likely to have become more effective and/or less seasonal.
