Abstract

The development of pans in the southwestern Kalahari appears to have been strongly influenced by changes in groundwater conditions. Spring-fed tufas on pan margins formed in periods of high groundwater discharge. Low, but fluctuating groundwater levels promoted deflation of sands and clays to form lunette dunes on the southern and eastern sides of the pans. It would appear that relationships between groundwater changes and rainfall changes are complex and, to date, poorly understood in this region.
