Abstract

A number of properties that define the physical state of the soil have a semi-permanent character: the general structure of the profile, granulometric constitution, mineralogy and—to a lesser extent—organic and ionic constituents of the different horizons. Interacting with those quasi stable properties, a second group of state characteristics are susceptible to a rapid and sometimes very important change under the influence of external climatic and cultural factors that are particularly active in the most exposed surface layers.
