Abstract

On the eve of the Universal Exhibition in 1889 the Eiffel Tower boldly pointed its 320 metres towards the sky. Though no longer the tallest structure in the world, it is still one of the most visited; but those who take a lift to the top are usually quite unaware of how it is rooted in the ground. When a person looks at it, he generally directs his eyes upward; let us for once reverse this temptation and regard it from the top down.
