The permanence of the earth's burden
Abstract
The earth has conserved only a few of the marks made upon it. The furrows made by the first ploughshares, the traces left by the first horseshoes and by the wheels of ancient carts have naturally disappeared forever. Nor is there now any sign of the saps and trenches dug out in the heat of long forgotten wars.
