Sudden destruction: Earthquakes
Abstract
Earthquakes and landslides have their place among the forces that have erased the traces of a civilization. From the remotest times they have caught the interest of numerous writers. The engulfing of Helice, to take but one example, is recounted by Heraclides Ponticus, Strabo, Pausanias, Aelian, Ephorus, Diodorus, and Latin writers such as Ovid, Pliny and Seneca.
