A refined approach to foundations: China in the first millennium
Abstract
In many countries, the first millennium of our era was a period when the lessons of the past sank into oblivion and were replaced by the belief in myths which often bore little relation to the real problems of builders. In India, a book on architecture, written in Sanskrit by an unknown author, probably of the seventh century, and translated into English in 1964 under the title ‘Architecture of Manasara Shilpashastra’, gives many of the numerous myths and customs related to the founding and construction of buildings.
