Abstract

Europe did not match the refined skill of the Chinese for a very long time and the early medieval builders who wished to emphasize the importance of their churches by means of towers had their setbacks. In 985 a.d. the tower of Ramsey Abbey, completed only ten years before, cracked and had to be rebuilt on firmer foundations; the same fate befell the West Tower at Gloucester in the eleventh century, the West Tower at Worcester in 1175 and the central tower of York Minster in the thirteenth century.
