Abstract

Linear dunes in the southwestern Kalahari are today largely inactive. Rainfall is too high and wind velocities too low for significant sand movement. Boundary conditions for dune reactivation in the region were determined by analysing the relationship between precipitation effectiveness and the duration of sand moving winds. The dunes were probably last active during the period 20 000-17 000 BP in conditions of higher wind velocities and possibly slightly reduced precipitation.
