Abstract

For more than seventy years the question has been discussed whether the middle Niger course, in Mali, was temporarily changed to the Azawad area during the Quaternary. In 1984, the discovery of holocene fossil fish North of Arawan supported this hypothesis. Field work and mapping of fluviolacustrine deposits from air photographs now present evidence for the existence of a broad interior delta up to c. 100 km to the North and North-East of Timbuktu, between 8 500 and 3 500 BP.
