Abstract

Mining activity in Ontario represents over $4 billion in annual production. This sector is encouraged by the government of Ontario to undertake mineral development through financial incentives offered under mineral resource taxation. Mining companies continue to explore and develop mineral deposits through generous write-offs and allowances under the Mining Tax Act. As a result of the complex nature of mineral taxation legislation, computers are playing an increasingly important role in the operational, administrative and planning functions of the Mining Tax Office in the Ministry of Revenue. The use of state-of-the-art technology has resulted in significant improvements in productivity in areas such as assessment of mining tax returns, modelling of the Mining Tax Act, sensitivity analysis, management decision-making, and office administration. Implementation of local area networks, micro-computer technology, fourth generation languages and integrated micro-mainframe information processing has resulted in greater efficiency with lower costs. As a result, the financial services provided to the mineral industry are now delivered in an efficient and cost-effective manner utilizing the latest available computer technology.
