Abstract

Relentless pressures placed on the Canadian minerals industry force mine operators to become more productive and to produce at lower unit costs than anyone else in the world. This has generated an intense drive to adopt techniques that demand a greater degree of mechanization, automation and computerization. The author reviews the developments in these three areas over the last decade and demonstrates that there is no turning back; computers, computer controls and monitoring, information management systems, expert systems are here to stay and will continue to develop at an unprecedented rate over the next decade.
