Abstract
The conventional methods for the design of open pits, as for examples moving cone or Lerchs and Grossman, require considerable efforts of programming. However, similar operations research problems have been solved in other industries using program packages, which are commercially available. In the present paper, we describe a method for the optimization of open pit contours using a flow algorithm and the SAS program package’s components SAS/OR and SAS/GRAPH, which are commercially available. The advantages of this method, other than low cost, include the ease of applying different angles at all points of the mine. A graphic representation of the optimal pit by SAS/GRAPH is given.
