Abstract

This communication describes the evolution and modernization of survey methodology and practise at Kidd Creek Mines Limited, Timmins Ontario. The Kidd Creek implementation of the Total Survey Station concept is very simple and relatively inexpensive: Employing conventional survey instruments (eg.: Wild T-1A), the technician keys field observations and notes into a programme operated data-collector, at the point of underground survey; The data-collector (eg.: The Psion Pocket Organiser II), verifies or indicates discrepancy within the observations and provides the technician with feedback of simple survey computations; based on the results, the operator may then choose appropriate action (eg.: re-survey); At a later time, the collected observations (within the data-collector) are uploaded to a host computing system (eg.: the Apple Macintosh microcomputer), manipulated, checked, archived, printed in field sheet form, plotted to scale and optionally, transmitted (as data), to other mainframe computer-based software systems (eg.: Mine val on the CDC CYBER 180/830). The data-collector paradigm is also described as adapted for use with borehole survey instrumentation
