Effect of finite-length CRD housing model on the response of BWR piping systems
Abstract
Transient response of the Control Rod Drive (CRD) piping system subject to start-up SCRAM conditions is calculated by the Method of Characteristics using a new mathematical modelling of the CRD housing with a finite, time-dependent piston travel length. Both the compressibility of the flow characteristics within the CRD housing and the dynamic effect of the CRD piston travelling as a moving boundary condition are considered in the present analysis. Calculation results are confirmed by previous experimental data in predicting both the SCRAM event evolution and the pressure peak occurrences.
