Abstract

Studies of the jet impingement forces caused by perpendicular flow against flat plates - mostly from circular nozzles - have been performed at KWU and by a number of other experimenters. Measurement data for flow onto other structures (such as H beams and pipes) from a non-circular nozzle (0.1-A break simulated by a rectangular cross section) are presented for the first time in this paper. On the basis of the information obtained, under quasi-steady-state experimental conditions, on discharge rates, pressure distributions, central dynamic pressure on the structure concerned etc., a method of calculation that is simple to use has been developed and provides quite a good description of the experimental results, as a comparison with measurements shows. The method of calculation can be applied to different structures by using the drag coefficients known from single-phase fluid dynamics.
