Fluid-elastic instability of heat exchanger tube arrays in potential cross-flow
Abstract
The fluid-elastic excitation mechanism in tube banks is a flutter-type of instability, caused by a change of the mutual position of the tubes within a bundle, hence excerting asymmetric fluid forces. This self-excited mechanism, which is distinct from vortex-induced vibration, since the unsteady fluid forces are generated by the motion of the tubes, manifests itself by large amplitude vibrations and often by so-called “oval” or ’’whirling” motions.
