Elastic-plastic FEM-analysis of an inner surface flaw in a pressure vessel
Abstract
The risk of failure of pressure vessels due to the presence of flaws is most commonly assessed by means of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM), e. g. in the ASME-Code (1974 ). Since the first solution of this problem by Irwin (1962) there have been numerous publications on stress intensity factor (SIF) calculations. Newman and Raju (1979) introduced estimation formulas which work for different flaw shapes and vessel geometries. Thus, the K-analysis of surface flaws is well established.
