Abstract

The nominal stress distribution and stress intensity factor for a part-through crack in a thin-walled elbow surface were determined. The calculation of 3D solutions for the stress intensity factor of a part-trough crack on plates or shells is a very expensive and time consuming task. The present work presents an alternative approach, based on the combination of the semiloof shell finite element, and the ’line spring model’.
