Abstract

Over the past few years substantial experimental and analytical efforts have been devoted to the resolution of the Pressurized Thermal Shock (PTS)-issue, worldwide. Experiments have been performed in facilities with scales ranging from 1/10 up to 1/2. In most cases, only a limited angular segment of the downcomer was simulated by a rectangular box-type wrap-up of the downcomer annulus. Also, the majority of experiments was performed in transparent mockups operating at very low pressures and resorting to fluid simulants, like salt solutions, to obtain fluid conditions with the desireable density difference ratios. None of the test facilities examined the thermal/ structural interactions component behavior of a complete vessel.
