Abstract

Carbon steel pipes are used in primary coolant piping systems in BWR plants e.g., feed water line, high and low pressure core spray lines, main steam line and so on. These piping systems have massive pipe whip restraints under the safety design condition of hypothetical doubleended pipe fracture. When leak-before-break concept is applied to the piping systems, the massive pipe whip restraints can be removed from the piping systems. As the results of the removal of the restraints, the reliability of in-service inspection increases, and radiation exposure associated with in-service inspection decreases in nuclear power plants.
