Abstract

Ontario Hydro has embarked on a program to use leak-before-break in lieu of providing pipe whip restraints for large diameter heat transport piping in its latest four unit CANDU generating station. In support of this program, elastic-plastic fracture mechanics analyses of various piping components with postulated throughwall cracks are being performed. The stability of the postulated cracks is assessed using the J-integral and tearing modulus approach. A description of the leak-before-break approach being used is given in a previous paper (Aggarwal et. al.).
