Abstract

Increasing knowledge in geoscience has led to a better understanding that, although highly unlikely, it is possible for a nuclear power plant to be subjected to earthquake ground motion greater than the design basis; consequently interest has developed in performing seismic margin assessments (SMAs) to demonstrate that nuclear power plants can safely withstand these postulated larger earthquakes. This larger earthquake is commonly referred to as a seismic margin earthquake (SME).
