Abstract

Dynamic absorbers or tuned mass dampers modify the vibrational characteristics of structures by incorporating small amount of auxiliary mass and spring into the original structures. They are widely used to suppress the peak vibration of resonance in many structures such as machines, ship hulls, bridges, buildings, etc. under various sources of excitation. In the structures provided with a mass damper, the amplitude of vibration is suppressed only in narrow frequency range called “suppression band” and therefor its application is effective basically in the problems in which the range of the exciting frequency is predictable.
