Abstract

Experience on equipment that has been subjected to earthquakes indicates that current codes used for aseismic design are conservative. Such conservatism may make systems less safe as it leads to overestraint which accommodates the comparatively frequent thermal transients less well. The inclusion of unnecessary snubbers, which need inspection and maintenance, can also result in increased power plant downtime and higher radiation exposure to personnel.
